Free report: Wetlands; critical part of our natural environment

by Asmita Gaire | 27-01-2020 15:13 recommendations 1

Wetlands are a critical part of our natural environment. They protect our shores from wave action, reduce the impacts of floods, absorb pollutants and improve water quality. They provide habitat for animals and plants and many contain a wide diversity of life, supporting plants and animals that are found nowhere else.

Few top benefits of wetland are:
1. Wildlife Nursery
2. Flood Control
3. Pollution Filter
4. Storm Buffer
5. Wind Buffer
6. Fertile Farm Land
7. Recreation and Tourism
8. Carbon Sink.

Human influences have caused significant changes in the function and quality of many wetlands. Widespread land development and clearing have caused increased erosion in uplands areas leading to increased sedimentation in lowland wetlands.

Wetlands support a complex set of birdlife, animals, insects and reptiles, and are very sensitive to pollution. Here are 10 ways to save our wetlands:

1. Join programs that help protect and restore wetlands.
Contact your local, municipality, community groups, environmental organizations or a non-government organisation about activities in your area.

2. Report illegal activities.
Report illegal activity such as filling, clearing, or dumping in wetlands to government authorities.

3. Pick up all litter and dispose in appropriate trash containers.
Also, keep surfaces that wash into storm drains clean of pet faeces, toxic chemicals, fertilizers, and motor oil, which eventually wash into our wetlands, polluting them.

4. Plant local tree species!
Plant only local species of trees, shrubs and flowers to keep the ecological balance of local wetlands.

5. Use ¡°living shoreline¡± techniques to stabilize the soil.
If you make use of waterfront property with a shoreline or riverbank, use ¡°living shoreline¡± techniques to stabilize the soil - a mix of plant roots, sand and stone instead of man-made structures.

6. Avoid wetlands if you are expanding your home or installing a shed.

7. Use phosphate-free laundry and dishwasher detergents.
Phosphates help algae grow, which can suffocate aquatic life.

8. Use paper and recycled products made from unbleached paper.
Use paper and recycled products made from unbleached paper. Bleached paper contains toxic chemicals that can contaminate water.

9. Use non-toxic products for household cleaning.
Use non-toxic products for household cleaning, lawn and garden care. Never spray lawn or garden chemicals on a windy or rainy day, as they will wash into the waterways.

10. Reduce, reuse and recycle household items and waste.

Do your part to protect and preserve our fragile ecosystems.
Here's a few photos of wetland I have recently visited. They are Betana Simsar and Jamunkhadi of Nepal. They are being protected for the benefits of environment.

By searching on the internet, I found that there are some famous wetlands around the world, and found some on Korea, where I live. Every time I get to hear about wetland, I will tell the people around me about the benefits and ways to preserve this precious terrain.

Thank you for the informative report.

  • Lisa Mentor says :
    Hey Asmita
    It's Lisa:)

Yes indeed, wetlands are important parts of our nature.
We could see its importance through the infamous Ramsar Convention as well.
There are many sites that are designated as wetlands to be protected according to the Convention and not only each nation but also international organizations are working together to protect the assets of mankind.

I hope that more young people get to know more about the importance of wetlands so that the legacy of the Convention continues on!

I think your report contributes to it and I think it's really great:)
    Keep it up dear!
