Air Pollution & Pakistan rationale

by Momina Ahsan | 08-11-2021 20:58 recommendations 0

In the midst of life, lying on his couch, he kept coughing intermittently. Until, his maid brought his inhaler to take medication. It was the 3rd year of his continuous usage of medication in inhaler form. Whenever he forgot, the wheezing sound of his chest and the intermittent cough brought the deadly scenario of breathing blockage for him. Not only this, but even one pollen in the air might lead him to the death bed. Yes! He was suffering from air pollution and it was causing dramatic impacts on his health.

This is not the issue of one person, but the ratio is increasing drastically by every passing day. Every third person is either the sufferer of air pollen allergies or the diseased one of any breathing issue. Suffocation, asthma, pollen allergies, congestion, edema in lungs, T.B and many other diseases are rising enormously due to air pollution. Thinking of this, I came across an article, having the survey of Faisalabad region with increase in air pollution during recent years. The reason behind this is the lack of awareness, excessive usage of personal transport and urbanization. Faisalabad came in with a PM2. 5 reading of 104.6 ¥ìg/m©ø in 2019 as its yearly average, putting it in the higher section of the 'unhealthy' ratings bracket, a rating that requires a PM2. 5 reading of anywhere between 55.5 to 150.4 ¥ìg/m©ø. A WHO report says every year exposure to air pollution is estimated to cause 7 million premature deaths and result in the loss of millions more healthy years of life. A report by WHO said exposure to air pollution is estimated to cause 7 million premature deaths. Yes! these are the scenario's that are actually bringing havoc in human life.

If we move ahead to the description of causes with impacts of air pollution on the definition of one health, then we come across to various reasons that can be reduced and eventually, may prevent mortalities with morbidities. Here are the few causes of air pollution enlisted:

  • Excessive usage of private transports
  • Excessive release of chemicals from different industries into the air.
  • Smoke from vehicles
  • Urbanization
  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • Wildfires
  • Open burning of garbage waste
  • Industrial emission

All these human with natural activities result in the air pollution. That is the reason, with increase in the human activities, air pollution is rising drastically. With increase in air pollution, consequently, humans and animals suffer from One health Ideology Demolition. The health effects of air pollution are serious – one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer and heart disease are due to air pollution. Microscopic pollutants in the air can slip past our body's defense, penetrating deep into our respiratory and circulatory system, damaging our lungs, heart and brain. Same is the case in animals, micropollutants can bring havoc for animals too. That is why, in the recent years, mortalities in the animals increased rapidly. Few impacts on animals health are:

  • Poison wildlife through the disruption of endocrine function
  • Organ injury
  • Increased vulnerability to stresses and diseases
  • Lower reproductive success
  • Possible death.
Further, long-term health effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases such as emphysema. Air pollution can also cause long-term damage to people's nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Some scientists suspect air pollutants cause birth defects.

If we cut short the discussion, air pollution is impacting on One Health Ideology by ruining humans, animals and globe health respectively. We can reduce air pollution by starting campaigns and working to influence people by our actions. In nutshell, the air pollution can be reduced by following actions that needs to be taken before any drastic damage to the globe:

  • Usage of Public transport to reduce vehicle emission and burning of fossil fuels.
  • Starting campaigns from individual to the national level
  • Planting more trees for fresh and excessive oxygen per person.
  • Installing industries far away from human's residence
  • Adapting natural habitats, and reducing involvement with natural phenomenon.
  • More plants, more forests and ultimately, healthy globe.
  • Recycling and Reusing to reduce the pollution burden
  • Using filters for chimneys
  • Adapting conventional and traditional lifestyle, rather than luxurious outlooks.
  • Reducing personal luxuries to impact general feasibilities.
  • Reduction of forest fires.

By doing so, not only we will save our present but also impact our future generations. Let's pledge to create an impact before the lose becomes irreversible. Together we can uplift standards through self-sufficiency and bring ONE HEALTH awareness to create sustainability.

Hello Momina, this is your mentor Hannah.

gosh I was surprised reading the first paragraph.
Great introduction of the causes and bad effects of air pollution on animals, and what actions we should take.
Especially, using filters for chimneys seems to be a great idea to me.
If the filter is installed to big factories and be replaced regularly, it would have a positive effect.
Thank you for your great article and please keep up with your wonderful work :)

    Sincerly,
    Hannah

Hello Momina, this is your mentor Joon.

Air Pollution is a serious issue which people often don't take it seriously. Yet, by reading through the consequences, most of us would get surprised and realize how overlooked this issue is. There are different and various sources of air pollutants all around us, and the key point of controlling air pollution is to analyze and evaluate how much it is affecting the air pollution. If this is done, then there we would get to see a source that is emitting a great portion of it, and that is a industry that needs moderation. This is a duty of our government. What we could do is already discussed in the article, but not limited to it. So please take your time thinking about what we can do, and put it into your action.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
