GMO( Genetically Modified Organism) are the heated issues of our world. Many issues are being raised and debated in this content. Many countries are standing against it by taking the points such as they are instable to the nature and have harsh effect in the economy of poor countries. Religious beliefs such as they act against the will of God and people should not be involved in the God's act of producing new species. Many also regard GMO as a conspiracy of Monsanto to take a lead over the seed market of world. But the major issue in context is " Can GMO be utilized to better our world?". And the answer is yes. Inspite of many demerits of GMO still they have a lot of positive assects and I have tried to list some of them: 1) The major aim of first point of Millennium goals and second point of Sustainable Development Goals is to increase the food production and end up the world hunger. This can never be achieved by the use of our presently avilable low yielding and disease suspectible local varieties. The use of GMO that have four times more production potential than the local varieties is a must. 2) Another use of GMO is the control of diseases not only of plants but also of humans. One of the most recent example to this is the development of banana vaccine. It is simply a banana crop that has potential to control Hepatitis B without the application of real vaccine. 3) Similarly the nutrient content of GMO crops is also high. They can be used not only to solve the food issues but also to control the nutrient deficiency diseases. Golden rice is a GMO crop that has high content of Vutamin A and the consumption of this supplies huge amount of Vitamin A to us. 4) Economic security of farmers can also be achieved by use of such crops. The major reason of banning all others GMO crops except Bt cotton in India is this. Bt cotton has higher yield and more resistant f disease and this is increasing the economic status of Indian farmers. 5) Similarly GMO crops prevent the 30% loss in crop yield by preventing the post harvest loss in storage. A major example of this is the better post harvest life of Flavis Flavour tomato as compared to other tomatoes. |
